Learning Arduino

Do you have any suggestions regarding resources for a beginner interested in learning about tinkering with hardware and software? It would be nice if there was a good video course introducing the Arduino. I found some ‘amateur’ stuff on YouTube, I was hoping for a more polished course. Does anyone know of a good Introduction to Arduino course, free or otherwise?

I’d recommend picking a fun project first, and then figuring out what the best starter kit would be to get there. If he wants to do basic things with LEDs, some simple sensors, and maybe some motors/servos, then arduino, picaxe, and phidgets would all work well.

A good place to start would be with some basic electronics knowledge. I read “Make: Electronics” a couple years ago, and I highly recommend this. While it just briefly touches on programmable components in a later chapter, it sets up the basic knowledge about soldering, DC, resistors, and transistors quite well, and the activities are fun. It covers the 555 timer quite a bit, which is a much cheaper component to work with than an arduino board (granted, it does much less, but you can build several useful circuits out of it if you have the patience).

Can anyone suggest any vendors for Arduino components? I’m not into electronics, so I’m really only familiar with Jameco.

I like sparkfun a lot. They have great customer service and I’ve never gotten a broken component.
