CompTIA Expands Beyond Multiple Choice
2012.08.15.01:31
Multiple choice has questions have been the staple of many certification exams since the first exam was written. Microsoft started adding simulation-based questions in 2005. Now CompTIA is finally making the leap. Performance-based questions will start appearing on CompTIA A+ exams in October 2012, in Network+ exams by the end of 2012, and Security+ in the first quarter of 2013. To answer these questions, candidates will have to perform a task or solve a problem using a simulated environment. Getting these questions right is potentially tricky, so be sure to read CompTIA’s announcement for further details.

CompTIA A+ Role-based Exams Formally Retired
2010.09.15.05:40
As planned, CompTIA recently removed its 600-series A+ certification exams from test centers. Those exams are no longer available, and the 2009 structure is now the only certification option. With the 2009 objectives, CompTIA A+ returned to its original format of a single two-exam track. For an overview of the latest requirements and information on an upgrade exam available to qualified individuals, see GoCertify’s A+ certification page.

Microsoft Launches Certification for Students
2010.07.15.05:20
Microsoft’s newest certification offering, Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA), is targeted at students and offers an entry point into Microsoft’s certification program at an even more basic level than that of the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist. MTA certification tests will be available in classrooms rather than test centers and can only be taken by students, faculty, and staff of academic institutions that purchase a license to participate in the MTA program. Each exam covers fundamental knowledge of a broad technology area, such as web development or network fundamentals, and focuses on 80% knowledge and 20% skills. In this program, one exam = one certification. Although the MTA is suggested as an entry point into the Microsoft certification program, it is not a required step, and most entry level certification candidates will probably be better served by going straight to Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS).

Core knowledge questions are given at the start of the exam, typically require five words or less to answer, and no documentation may be used. More details and related discussions are available on Cisco’s website.

The software also includes a chapter-by-chapter study guide and a comprehensive explanation of all the exam answers.
